Message from the Principal

Akila Jones has been with the Hawthorne School District for nearly 19 years. She began in 1999 as a substitute teacher working throughout the district in various elementary schools. Her first teaching position was in 2000 teaching first grade at Eucalyptus Elementary. She later moved to Hawthorne Middle School where she has held three positions: Special Projects Teacher (2006), Assistant Principal (2014) and currently as Principal.  This will be her first year as the principal of Hawthorne Middle School.

Ms. Jones is excited about this school year! She is confident that students will continue to thrive as they are being challenged through rigorous academic programs while gaining exposure to enriching sports, music and theatrical activities. She is ready to continue working with students, parents, teachers and the community in a manner which supports academic success for all students.

For fun, Ms. Jones enjoys spending time with her family, traveling, camping and visiting national parks.  Ms. Jones has two children ages 23 and 20 who are both in college. She also enjoys spending time with her two dogs, Maui, 3 and Ace, 1. Ms. Jones also has a large frog collection consisting of figurines, bears, stickers and other unique items; stop by her office to see!

HMS Literacy Night

HMS had their annual Literacy Night on Thursday, November 9th in the school's cafeteria. Close to 200 people were in attendance to take part in some Literacy Fun! Families were encouraged to visit as many stations as possible so that they can fill up their stamp cards which then became their raffle ticket.

We had 4 lucky winners at the end of the night that were able to take home a family-themed basket which included a board game, puzzle, snacks, and HMS apparel. All other HMS students walked away with a free chapter book that was donated by the local Hawthorne Public Library.

Literacy Night was a huge success. Thank you to all who helped in making this event a great one.

Traffic and Drop-Offs

Please remember that it is a violation of the vehicle code to drop off students in front of the barricade on 129th street if you are not parked in a designated area. Also, stopping to park and drop off students in the alley off of 129th is prohibited. The gated parking lots are for employee parking only. We open this gate for parent nights and for the ALL program pick up only. Thanks for your support!
